HVAC Load Calculations for Medical, Dental and Veterinary Clinics

Engineer stamped

Room-by-room cooling and heating loads, outdoor air calculations and air balance reports for medical offices, dental offices and veterinary clinics.

A clinic looks like an office on the drawings and does not behave like one. Exam and treatment rooms are small and closed, and the ventilation rates come from a different part of the code. We prepare stamped cooling and heating load calculations for clinics, with the outdoor air calculation and air balance report that plan review asks for.

Buildings we work on

  • Medical offices and outpatient clinics
  • Dental offices
  • Veterinary offices and clinics
  • Interior build-outs and expansions of existing clinic space

Most are between 2,000 and 6,500+ square feet.

What you get

  • Room-by-room cooling and heating loads by ASHRAE methods
  • The outdoor air calculation, to the governing code for the jurisdiction
  • Air Balance Report
  • A zone map, where the building has more than one zone
  • A stamped, plan-review-ready document

Energy code compliance documentation is prepared with the loads where the project needs it. See Energy Code Compliance.

How clinics differ

The ventilation standard has to be settled first. An outpatient clinic falls under either ASHRAE Standard 170, Ventilation of Health Care Facilities, or the outpatient health care rates in ASHRAE Standard 62.1, depending on what the adopted code and the authority having jurisdiction determine. The two give different rates for the same room, so we confirm which applies before any calculation starts. Both are in our free Ventilation Rates calculator.

Small closed rooms. Each exam, operatory or treatment room is its own load, with its own people, lighting and equipment behind a closed door. That is why the loads are run room by room and the airflow is reported room by room.
